[Detailed explanation] Why the stylish Cat Cellar scratching post is chosen

I think there are many people who thought, "Cat Cellar is great, I'd like to buy it," but found the price to be a barrier.

However, the Cat Cellar has many advantages that go beyond being just a cardboard scratching post. If you are unsure whether to purchase it, we highly recommend you give it a try (in fact, it is even used by famous celebrities!).

In this article, we will talk about the secret behind the ``value'' of cat sellers.

1. High-quality materials

First of all, the materials are high-strength and high-quality, making them extremely durable.
Most people have been using it for more than two years.

What does it mean for a scratching post to become worn out in the first place?

To get really technical, cardboard has a three-layer structure with corrugated paper sandwiched between layers of paper on the surface. Usually, the corrugated paper (called the core) is made of weaker paper. Therefore, when scratching, the corrugated paper wears down, producing sharpening shavings and causing the cardboard to become tattered.

The strength of cardboard is usually determined by the "weight of the paper." In other words, the greater the weight per unit area, the stronger the cardboard. For example, cardboard made with 200g/m² paper is stronger than cardboard made with 100g/m² paper.

Even products advertised as "made of reinforced cardboard" or "reinforced core" have a surface paper weight of over 400 g/m2, making them very thick and strong, but the corrugated paper is usually made of weaker (lighter) paper, so the most common weight is a maximum of 160 g/m2-180 g/m2.

[Diagram] You can see that the surface is thick, but the wavy part inside is made of thin paper.

In contrast, Cat Cellar uses and specially orders high-strength cardboard, with 200g/m² for the corrugated paper (which is thick and strong because it is heavy!) and 280g/m² for the surface paper. Because it is made by a company that specializes in cardboard and interior design, it is possible to select cardboard that is less likely to produce grinding dust and is also appropriate.

Naturally, we use domestically produced cardboard. There have been reports of scratching posts made in factories in China, Vietnam, etc. absorbing moisture during storage and transportation, which can lead to insect infestations, but because we use brand new, domestically produced cardboard, and we manufacture it to order, we are able to provide a more hygienic product than other scratching posts.

Furthermore, wood is used for the surface and joints, which is unusual for a scratching post. We are not a manufacturer that makes cardboard boxes, but rather we are a manufacturer that designs products with interior quality in mind, assuming their use as interior décor, which is why we are able to select such materials. Even in homes that have been using the product for 2-3 years, there has been almost no damage to the wooden parts. As a result, the product can maintain its beauty as an interior décor for a long time.

Of course, the cat cellar will also deteriorate over the years as shown in the photo at the beginning of this article.

In addition to selecting a durable material, the top surface, which is the easiest place for scratching (where sharpening marks are most visible), is replaceable, allowing for up to four uses. Two years have passed since the first customer purchased it, and almost all customers have been able to continue using it without replacing it, and we have received positive feedback. It is likely to last nearly 10 times longer than a regular scratching post, making it far more economical and hygienic than having to purchase a new scratching post that costs around 3,000 yen each time.

A major feature of the Cat Cellar is that it does not produce any sharpening dust over the years, making it a favorite piece of interior décor.

2. Multi-functionality

Cat Cellar is advertised as a "designer scratching post," but it has a design and multiple functions that go beyond those of a regular scratching post.

①Bed

The top surface is a favorite bed and is very popular. It has a generous depth of about 410mm, so even large cats can use it comfortably. We have also received happy reports that cats spend a lot of their time here!

② Nail scratching post

Since it is made entirely of cardboard, it can of course be used as a scratching post.

③Hideout

The two large tunnel-like holes provide a relaxing space for your cat.

Supervising veterinarian Dr. Nyantosu also commented that it is important for cats to have such hiding spaces in the home.

One customer has told us that they always hide here when there is thunder and it calms them down.

④Playground

You can play with your cat by having toys appear and disappear on both sides of the tunnel.

In homes with multiple cats, you might see cats playing with each other. Many photos of such cats have been posted.

3. Thorough attention to detail through collaboration between veterinarians and architects

Veterinarians and architects have thoroughly supervised the project, and experts have collaborated to create it with great attention to detail, taking time to complete.

The Cat Cellar was originally conceived with the idea of creating a new type of scratching post, with the idea being to create a scene where cats are displayed like in a wine cellar.

From there, we created the Cat Cellar, a product that was created with the utmost attention to detail through repeated prototyping and monitoring to ensure that there was enough space for a hiding place, curves that made it easy to relax in, and size.

Our current products have been created through extensive consideration, not only in terms of design, but also to ensure that they are what cats love.

4. Handmade in Japan

Structures made of thin boards like those used in Cat Cellars are not suitable for mass production, so they are carefully handmade by domestic businesses, using digital processing techniques.

We have a small factory in Sumida Ward where we do the main processing, and we purchase parts from various local factories. At Cat Cellar, we outsource the main processing of hand-pasting the cardboard to a cardboard factory in Kyoto, and outsource the joining work to a local woodworker (which also ensures perfect transparency!).

Originally, Kamikagu Co., Ltd., the distributor, was a venture company with no manufacturing know-how or processing machinery. However, they built a production system from scratch, wanting to meet the demand for products that had been received through pre-orders. While this may seem inefficient to those around them, they work with passion to create the best products.

To be honest, the cost is very high
However, the company is able to operate as a retail store online while still having factory functions, which means it does not incur intermediate costs, and it is able to plan higher value-added products in-house, with a focus on design and other aspects.
